About

Geeska - New Horizon

Geeska (The Horn) website is a cultural media platform that monitors political, cultural, economic, and security developments in the Horn of Africa region. It provides analyses, investigations, opinion pieces, and features in Somali, Arabic, and English languages. The website aims to establish a voice owned by the sons and daughters of the region, contributing to shaping the image of cultural media in the Horn of Africa.

Why Geeska?

The website endeavors to fill the void of a comprehensive platform dedicated to in-depth analysis, opinion articles, and a space for culture, arts, and book reviews in the media landscape of the Horn of Africa. Furthermore, it seeks to transcend regional divisions and narrow disparities, engaging constructively with the regional realities and developments to comprehend them based on the shared intellectual and ethical responsibilities among the people of the Horn of Africa.
Through these efforts, we aim to provide a platform for intellectuals in the region, fostering a political horizon through responsible, objective, and serious journalism, receptive to similar local experiences and contexts.

Sections of the Website

Somali Section

Geeska website aspires to be a progressive and reliable media platform within the Somali cultural scene, combating misinformation, prevailing clan biases, external interventions from foreign interests, and advocating for human rights and women's rights.

Arabic Section

The Arabic section primarily targets the Arab reader to offer an accurate portrayal of the Horn of Africa, contributing to a better understanding of this region. Despite its proximity to the Arab world, its image might sometimes appear fragmented or distorted. Hence, we strive to draw a new, multifaceted perspective, shedding light on the reality of this region undergoing significant transformations with regional and international repercussions.

English Section

A considerable percentage of Horn of Africa residents reside globally due to migrations and recurring civil wars, leading to the formation of a political, cultural, and economic elite. Therefore, any project seeking to influence the global scene regarding these countries must prioritize the English section. English is the language of influential international entities in the region and its institutions. Additionally, it serves as the language for elite researchers regularly publishing about the region in international press.A considerable percentage of Horn of Africa residents reside globally due to migrations and recurring civil wars, leading to the formation of a political, cultural, and economic elite. Vision

The website launched independently in mid-January 2023 with a specific and clear vision: expanding the margins of discussion on social and cultural issues in the Horn of Africa, providing a space for new voices transcending ethnic/regional/tribal affiliations. This is accomplished by creating a new independent space for critical thinking, exchange of ideas, experiences, and practices in the cultural sphere. Moreover, the website aims to bridge the gap between the people of the Horn of Africa and global cultures through translation.
