A disturbing video that went viral on Somali social media over the weekend has sparked nationwide outrage and condemnation. The footage shows a mentally ill man being brutally assaulted by a group of individuals in Dadumaay village, located on the outskirts of Wanlaweyn District in Somalia’s Lower Shabelle region.
In the video, the victim is seen being tied up, beaten with sticks, stoned, and ultimately set on fire while several onlookers record the attack. Some individuals in the footage appear to be armed with rifles, pointing them toward the victim during the assault. The graphic nature of the incident has shocked viewers across the country and ignited widespread calls for justice.
In an official statement, the Southwest State Ministry of Information and Social Awareness condemned the killing as a “heinous crime” that violates every principle of humanity, peace, and coexistence. “The Government of Southwest State strongly condemns the horrific act that occurred in Dadumaay,” the statement said. “Such brutality has no place in our society and is completely contrary to human dignity, peace, and social harmony.”
The administration in Baidao has pledged to launch a full investigation. It warned that it will not tolerate actions that endanger public safety or undermine social stability. “Those behind this crime are enemies of peace and progress,” the statement added.
Wanlaweyn District Commissioner Abdulqadir Mohamed Abdullahi, speaking at a press briefing, extended condolences on behalf of the local administration and residents. “We are deeply saddened by this tragedy,” Abdullahi said. “Such an inhumane act must be condemned by all Somalis and addressed urgently. Security forces have already launched an operation in the area, four suspects are in custody, and the operation is ongoing.”
Dahir Amin Jesow, a Member of Somalia’s Federal Parliament representing Southwest State, also denounced the killing: “The individuals responsible for burning a human being alive have committed a deeply disturbing and unforgivable act. To tie someone up and set them on fire is a grave violation of human rights.”
Early reports indicate the killing may be linked to Aano Qabiil, a longstanding tradition of clan-based revenge in which people are targeted not for personal wrongdoing, but solely due to their clan affiliation. This practice has fueled intergenerational cycles of violence and continues to result in serious human rights abuses. This latest incident, however, is being described as one of the most shocking acts of vigilante brutality ever to circulate publicly in Somalia. The graphic videos have left many Somalis horrified and demanding swift and decisive justice.
