Somaliland’s president, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Irro), on Sunday presided over the groundbreaking of the new Taiwan Medical Center and officially inaugurated a major modernization project for Hargeisa Group Hospital — a flagship effort reflecting the deepening ties between Somaliland and Taiwan.

Funded by the Government of Taiwan, the twin initiative is hailed as a significant breakthrough in the development of Somaliland’s healthcare system. When completed, the Taiwan Medical Center and the upgraded Hargeisa Group Hospital are expected to provide “advanced, high-quality healthcare services,” reducing the need for patients to seek treatment abroad.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Irro “expressed deep gratitude” to Taiwan for its partnership and investment in Somaliland. He described Taiwan as a steadfast ally whose contributions in health, education, and technology are improving lives and strengthening institutions across Somaliland.

Recently the Hargeisa’s local government along with Taiwan officials have officially opened Taiwan Avenue, roadway connects Egal International Airport to central Hargeisa. Funded jointly by Taiwan and the Hargeisa Local Government, with Taiwan covering 70% of the first-phase costs.

Taiwan–Somaliland relations have expanded steadily since the two sides opened representative offices in 2020. The partnership has mainly covered healthcare support, agricultural development, and technology assistance. Taipei has provided medical equipment, scholarships, and training programs, while Somaliland officials have welcomed increased economic and diplomatic engagement. On July this year, Taiwan and Somaliland signed a coast guard cooperation agreement in Taipe.
